What's typical in Metro Detroit

Auto restoration and parts

Metro Detroit's car culture, from the annual Woodward Dream Cruise to the region's many restoration shops and hobbyists, makes body, frame, and parts stripping one of the most common requests. Shops with booths and cabinets handle drop-off parts and rotisserie bodies, and mobile crews handle frames and trailers on site. Ask whether they use gentler media on sheet metal and how soon bare metal will be primed.

Older brick homes and buildings

Detroit and its inner-ring suburbs have a large stock of pre-1978 homes and brick buildings. Two cautions apply:

  • Painted surfaces in pre-1978 homes may contain lead. Under EPA's RRP rule, open abrasive blasting of paint is prohibited unless it's HEPA-shrouded or contained. Details.
  • Abrasive blasting can damage brick faces and mortar. NPS Preservation Brief 6 explains why gentler methods are preferred on historic masonry.

Historic districts

Detroit has many locally designated historic districts. The city requires approval from its Historic District Commission for exterior changes within those districts (City of Detroit: Making Exterior Changes within Local Historic Districts). Several suburbs, such as Birmingham, Plymouth, and Northville, also have local districts. Check before you blast masonry or siding.

Industrial and commercial

The region's manufacturing and supplier base generates steady work on tooling, fixtures, structural steel, tanks, and facility cleaning, including dry ice blasting of production equipment. Commercial clients should expect contractors to work to a written coating spec and MIOSHA exposure rules.

Access and logistics

Dense neighborhoods mean tight driveways, close neighbors, and street parking for compressors. That makes containment, noise hours, and wet or dustless methods more important here than in rural areas.
