Sandblasting in Kalamazoo & Southwest Michigan

What's typical in Southwest Michigan

Clean manufacturing: medical, pharma, and food

The Kalamazoo area is home to Stryker's headquarters and Pfizer's large Portage manufacturing site, and Battle Creek is a major food-processing center. In settings like these, dry ice blasting is often preferred for cleaning equipment because it leaves no secondary media behind. Plant work usually requires contractor safety programs and site orientation.

Fruit-belt agriculture

Van Buren, Berrien, and Allegan counties are among Michigan's major fruit-growing areas, with blueberries, apples, grapes, and more. Orchard sprayers, harvest equipment, bins, and trailers need periodic rust and paint removal, often blasted on the farm by mobile crews.

Lake Michigan harbors

South Haven, St. Joseph, and nearby harbors generate boat-bottom and hull work. Copper-based antifouling paint debris should be contained and handled under marina rules.

Older homes near downtown Kalamazoo

Kalamazoo's older neighborhoods have many pre-1978 homes, so EPA RRP rules on blasting painted surfaces apply to paid work. Kalamazoo also has local historic districts, where exterior work generally needs commission approval under Michigan's Local Historic Districts Act.

Near the Kalamazoo River

Parts of the Kalamazoo River and Portage Creek corridor are within the Allied Paper/Portage Creek/Kalamazoo River Superfund site. For any blasting near waterways, keep spent media and paint debris out of storm drains and the river.
