Log homes and cabins
Log homes and wood-sided cottages are common across the north. Media blasting strips failed finishes and weathered gray wood so logs can be re-stained and sealed. Corn cob is a gentle option, and crushed glass is more aggressive for heavily weathered logs. Published ranges run about $2.75–$6.25/sq ft (Pencil Log Pros, “Media Blasting a Log Cabin”) and $3.50–$6.00/sq ft (Log Home Finishing LLC, media blasting guide). Logs need to be dry, and stain should go on soon after blasting.
Boats, docks, and lifts
Grand Traverse Bay and the region's inland lakes mean plenty of boats, steel boat lifts, and dock hardware needing rust and paint removal, mostly off-season. Keep blasting debris away from shorelines and out of the water, and contain bottom-paint debris.
Travel and scheduling
Blasting contractors are fewer and farther apart up north. Expect travel charges (HomeGuide cites $50–$500 for transportation where it applies), and book early for the late spring to early fall window. Many log stains and coatings have minimum application temperatures, so the outdoor season is shorter than downstate.
Older cottages
Older cottages may carry layers of paint from before 1978. If a cottage is a home or rental and the work is paid, EPA RRP rules apply to disturbing that paint, and open blasting is prohibited without HEPA-shrouded or contained equipment.
Equipment
Farm, orchard, and forestry equipment and trailers in the region also need periodic rust removal and repainting. Mobile crews can do this on site.
